June 2013 Favourites

junefavsYves Rocher Eyeshadow Pencil in Pink Orchid (Rose Orchidée) – CAD$5.95 (LE)

This is part of Yves Rocher’s limited edition Retropical collection, which features several summery colours and shades in a wide variety of products such as eyeshadow pencils, mascara, eyeliners etc.  I bought this with a blue mascara and duo eyeliner pencil, and this is my favourite from the collection, definitely!  It’s a gorgeous rose-coppery colour that looks good blended out all over the lid or just in the crease.  I’ve used this on my lower lash line and I find it makes me look a little tired because it’s red toned, and since I’m usually trying to get rid of any redness it has an opposite effect of what I’m going for.  See my post on the collection here.  For a swatch, there’s a picture near the bottom of this post.

Fresh Supernova Mascara – USD$25

fresh supernova mascara

I received a sample of this in a Fresh gift set and I gotta say I’m really pleasantly surprised by it! It gives a really nice curl to the lashes and just makes them look great overall.  I find the formula to be wet, which I like.  The brush is kind of rectangle shaped with slight curves.  This might be my favourite higher-end mascara to date!

Smashbox Fusion Soft Lights – USD$30/ CAD$36

smashbox soft fusion lights

This is an awesome muti-use product from Smashbox, that, admittedly, I had overlooked for about a year after buying it (in a gift set).  One day I pulled it out and haven’t put it back since.  I apply this all over the face as a setting powder to add some sheen (not glitter) and have a dewey-er complexion which works great for summer.  More than that, I use it for eyeshadow.  The colours aren’t super pigmented, but I like that because it makes for a nice neutral eye look.  I’ve been using the lighter white and pink colours all over the lid, with the darker brown colours in the crease.  I especially love the orange-brown colour.  I usually pair that look with a orange coral lip colour, which brings me to…

Revlon Lip Butter in Tutti Fruiti – $7.99

I gotta say, after I purchased this back a few months ago, I had a bit of buyer’s remorse.  I got it on sale for $3.99, but still after trying it at home I had no plans of ever wearing it out of the house.  Enter Summer 2013 with the huge orange trends and I just can’t get this off my lips!  I rarely choose the same lippy two days in a row but I have used this one more than any of my other ones in ages.  If you don’t know how to embrace the orange trend, I’d totally recommend this as a starting point.  The colour is semi-sheer, but it definitely shows up on the lips without fail!  Depending on your natural lip colour, this could look a bit more red or more orange.  On me I’d say it comes out more orange-coral.  Love!!!

Rimmel Scandaleyes Kajal eyeliner in Light Blue – $7

rimmel scandaleyes

I love this for the waterline.  Some might think that it looks a bit unnatural, but since I’m a fan over having white on the waterline, opting for blue in the summer months is a bit of a no-brainer for me.  I bought this in lieu of the Nars Larger Than Life Eyeliner in Barrow Street, which is a light seafoam green.  I find Light Blue is very similar but a blue version (obviously).  I still want the Nars one, but at more than $25 a pop, I think I’ll stick to Rimmel for now.

Sephora Collection Matte Primer – USD$15/CAD$20

I’ve been using a sample for about a month now, and I think I prefer it to my Tarte and Smashbox ones.  Silicone is supposed to make dry skin even drier so I like this one for a slightly more moisturizing alternative.  I might consider buying the full size of this once I’m done all my primer samples.

Real Techniques Core Collection – $19.99real techniques

I love the whole collection, but my two favourites are the buffing brush for applying foundation or cream blush and the pointed foundation brush, which I use for under eye concealer.  After hearing much hype about these guys, I was thrillllled to hear that we would be getting them at Walmart in Canada.  I gotta say, the hype is justified because these are great brushes.  It’s actually the first time I’ve ever applied foundation or concealer with a brush (before I was using a damp sponge, which I still like).  I don’t think the buffing brush is sold separately, but I’ve heard great things about the expert face brush which might be my next brush-buy!

I would love to hear your June favourites!

To make the cropped images in this post, I followed an awesome tutorial from here.

Instagramings of May

My month of May in Instagrams

instagramsmay1. My sister’s “15th” birthday.  She’s actually 18, but still 15 in my mind.2. I found the Real Techniques brushes at Walmart so I wanted to give them a try.  Really impressed so far!3. I’m such a foodie and I love junk food.  Especially junk food from the UK, it would seem.  An awesome store here called Brambles imports goodies from around the UK.4. Few things make me happier than NEW TEA!!!! A Teavana opened up in Montreal a few months ago so I went to check it out.5. Kitty takes a nap on the newspaper (like usual).  Whenever you read something he needs to sleep on it.

Valentine’s day gifts for your Man Valentine!!!

Congratulations.  You’ve waited until the last possible moment to buy a gift for your significant/insignificant other.  Here are some things that you should probably go buy now.  Like now.

Cologne

While I’m not one that makes a habit of sniffing men’s colognes at department stores, I have come across a few different ones that I find smell nice so I’m going to share those with you.

D&G The One for men

Dolce & Gabbana – The One

This is my favourite man-perfume. It smells fantastiqueee; fresh, but spicy at the same time. Even the bottle itself is something worthy of display.  Definitely my top recommendation because I think it would suit most guys who are passed the “Axe” stage (you know what I’m talking about).

Notes:

Grapefruit, Coriander, Basil, Cardamom, Ginger, Orange Blossom, Cedar, Tobacco, Ambergris.

Burberry – Brit For Men

How can you go wrong with a cologne that has Tonka Beans and Nutmeg as the main notes?

Notes:
Bergamot, Green Mandarin and Ginger Accord, Cardamom, Cedarwood, Wild Rose, Nutmeg, Tonka Beans, Oriental Woods Accords, Gray Musk.

Shirts

You’ve always wanted to give him a wardrobe makeover so here’s your chance.  Buy him clothes that you want him to wear.  That’s it.

Here’s what I like:

TOPMAN

If he’s not preppy then buy him a band t-shirt. (Man)bitches love bands.

Rockabilia.com

Nerds, I’ve got you covered:

Wallets/bags

Fossil men’s wallet. Retail: $30-50

I highly suggest checking out stores like Winners or TJ Maxx for nice wallets at a very discounted price.

Aldo.com retail: $35

Food

Make him cake. I typed “cake recipe” into google and got a page full of options.  If you’re feeling festive then make one with valentines colours.

Or you could always buy a cake or chocolate.  I hear the grocery store has some nice pre-made ones 🙂

Give him a massage

Interpret that as you will…  If you want to make it extra special, use something like a massage bar from Lush.   Lush has a whole Valentine’s day section which includes a variety of soap, bath bombs and more all of which are V-day themed.  Most retail for around $10.

Some stuff that I think looks cool:

Lush “Tender is the Night” massage bar

Lush “Soft Coeur” massage bar

The Soft Coeur massage bar (last image pictured) is also edible which adds even more to the fun!

So hopefully this helped someone out a bit!  Just remember that most guys aren’t picky and half of them will forget that today is Valentine’s day anyway! :- )

Julep Maven Subscription February 2013

Julep Bombshell box for February 2013

Julep Bombshell box for February 2013

Included in my February box is…

Laura – Olive khaki creme

Ginger – Sand holographic

Oxygen Nail Treatment

Freedom Polymer Top Coat

+bonus:

Travel eyelash curler

Valentine’s chocolates 🙂

Julep is a monthly subscription service that retails for $19.99 for 2 or 3 nail colours (which retail for $14 each at stores such as Sephora) and/or different products ranging from Julep brand mascara, lotion etc.  This month had a special offer which included the bonus top coat.  I’m usually an It Girl, but I loved the look of the Ginger holographic so I switched to Bombshell.  I’ll admit that I usually skip the months because I find it hard to justify spending $20 on nail polish each month when I already own tons of bottles but since there was the bonus top coat included, I decided to go for it.  I’ve since tried the top coat and I cannot believe how fantastic it is! Ir dries quickly and left my nails looking ridiculously shiny and feeling so so smooth.  It’s without a doubt the best top coat I’ve ever used.

Edit: I’ve tried the top coat for about a week and a half now and unfortunately I’ve come to realize that it CHIPS LIKE CRAZY.  Sometimes after only 2-3 days 🙁 The first time I had applied many coats of the (non-Julep) polish before applying this top coat and my nails were chipping the next day.  The second time I tested it with “Ginger” underneath and I used only two thin coats of the polish and another thin coat of the top coat and it still chipped really quickly.

Also, as mentioned, I tried out Ginger and I really love it.  It looks like shiny grains of beige taupe-coloured sand on the nail but it’s a really warm colour, I find.  Will probably look good/better with a tan; it’s winter in Canada so naturally I’m extremely pale and it makes my hands looks a bit dead haha.

January 2013 Glymm Box

Helllooo. Here’s what I got in my (very late) Glymm bag for January. Image

This month’s bag is a taupe-silver colour and contained 5 samples. Image

LA FRESH Facial cleansing wipes – 2 packs / Full size is $3/ pouch

LASHEM Double Trouble Mascara / Full size is $20

360 Skincare Lavender Mint Firming Serum / Full size is $34/1 oz

Coolway Boost Serum / Full size is $40/ 9 oz

Burt’s Bees Milk and Honey lotion (No information on this as it wasn’t included in the pamphlet) Image

Thoughts: Over, I am somewhat happy with this month’s box, but not overly thrilled with Glymm and neither are most customers. They’ve recently raised their prices to $15/month (from $12) and have taken away many perks that were selling points for their brand.  Check out the comments on their Facebook page.  Most aren’t positive.  I’ve only been subscribed for 3 months (this is my third bag) and I’ve yet to see any luxury products that are promised.  I like this bag, though, because I will use every product in it.  Only one I’m confused about is the Coolway hair serum; is it a treatment or a conditioner? I’m not sure.  Also, the LASHEM (a brand that we got a sample from in the December bag) is so tiny.  Have you ever seen a mascara sample – probably a 3 time use thing- that small?  I wonder if I’ll get to try it before I lose it.

Overall thoughts of Glymm

I don’t regret trying the service, but I definitely regret signing up for 6 months. That’s $80!!!! How much stuff that I know I like could I have bought with that?! A lot more than eye cream and fake eyelashes (see: Glymm December).  After you sign up for a subscription you’re locked in and can’t cancel.  As of now I have no plans to continue my subscription come April.

If you would like the subscribe to Glymm you can use my referral link here.

December 2012 Glymm box

This month’s Glymm box did not impress, to say the least.

There were four products in this month’s box.

Products:

The pouch is a shiny gold colour.

(Small metal tube) “Clinically proven” eyelash & brow enhancing serum by LashFM.  Full size is $70.  No idea how much is in this sample.

LashFM false lashes.  $5.

Suncoat “award winner” nail polish. Full size: $10.  This polish apparently comes off with hot water.  Still trying to find a point to it (won’t it come off in the shower??)

Glamorous cruelty-free lipstick.  A full size is $4.50-$9.50.  The colour I got is “15.” Sounds fancy.

Didn’t even bother to open the lipstick.  The only thing I might use in this box are the lashes; the eyelash serum is being given to my sister and the nail polish will probably rot in my drawer.

EDIT: I opened the lipstick, it’s a blue-based red. Packaging seems extremely cheap.

NOT IMPRESSED, GLYMM.

If you’re interested in comparing this month’s box to last year’s December box, I’ve found a nice blog post on it here.
